Bike & Segway Tour FAQs

Bike & Segway Tour FAQs

What is your cancellation policy for tours?

If you would like to reschedule your reservations, you may do so at any time based on availability. If you cancel up to 48 hours prior to the tour start time and would like a refund we will issue a refund less a 10% service fee. No refunds are issued for reservations cancelled with less than 48 hours notice (only Bike and Roll Washington DC credit). We reserve the right to cancel any tour for weather or other reasons. If the tour is cancelled, and you are unable to make any of the rescheduled tours, we will issue a refund for the cancelled tour. If the weather is questionable, please call one to two hours prior to the start time to confirm status. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your tour time (20 minutes prior if you have booked a burley or trailer tandem). Participants arriving after the tour departure time risk forfeiture of their tour seats.

What if it rains?

Bike and Roll Washington DC reserves the right to cancel tours for safety concerns such as high winds, thunderstorms, excessive heat or cold, or other severe conditions. For both bikes and segway tours, we will provide rain ponchos and go out in light rain or drizzle. Our Segways are completely waterproof and are capable of going out in most weather. If Bike and Roll Washington DC cancels the tour you may either reschedule or request a full refund. We constantly monitor the weather and ask for a local contact number so that we can notify you of any necessary changes.

Is a guided tour for me?

Our tours provide great introductions to Washington, DC and Alexandria, VA and are a fun and interactive way to sightsee and get familiar with the cities. The tours go to popular sites as well as some that you may not know about. Your tour guide will provide you with fun facts about the sites’ history and provide insider tips that will be helpful and may help you plan the rest of your visit in Washington, DC. The bike tours have a maximum of 15 people at a time (Segways have an 8 person cap) and are completed at a relaxing pace. You don’t need to be an avid cyclist to bike the sites with us! All Segway tours include a 30 minute training period to make sure you are comfortable and safe. If you would like more flexibility in what you see and where you go you might consider booking a private tour or renting a bike and exploring on your own.

Can I bring my kids on the tour?

Yes, and we highly recommend that you do! We have individual bikes for children 4’6” and taller; toddlers and smaller children can ride behind a parent or guardian in trailer carriers or on trailer tandems that attach to adult bikes. For a child to ride their own bike on tour, they must be able to operate hand brakes and be tall enough to clear the cross bar (typically at least 4’5″ tall). We reserve the right to switch a child rider to a trailer tandem if they are unable to safely operate their own bike. We invite you to come early and test out the equipment if you have questions about the size. Our Monuments and Monuments@Nite tours cover about 4 miles and offer opportunities to walk around the memorials and are great for families with children of all ages and abilities. Our Capital Sites and Capital Sites@Nite tours are more comprehensive and cover greater distance (7 – 8 miles) and may be better for families with children with stronger riding skills.

Unfortunately, it is DC law that you must be at least 16 years old to ride a Segway.

Are there physical requirements for riding the Segways?

There are both age and weight requirements to ride the Segways. DC law requires all Segway riders be 16 years of age or older. Riders must weigh a minimum of 100lbs and a maximum of 260lbs. Women who are pregnant may not ride the Segways. Participants must be able to comfortably balance and stand on their own for 2 hours.

How safe are the tours?

Safety is our number one priority. Each bike tour begins with a safety and bike usage talk. The tour route takes place on paths, trails, and sidewalks. We provide helmets (which all tour participants must wear) as well as reflective vests and safety lights on our evening tours. Our Segway tours include a 30 minute safety talk and practice session, which includes one on one training with your guide to make sure you are comfortable on the Segway.

How do I check for tour availability and make reservations?

You can check availability and make tour and rental reservations online. We will ask for the names of all participants and their approximate heights so we may fit each rider with the appropriate size bike. Walk-ups are welcome if space is available. Tours fill quickly and reservations are strongly recommended. Click here to check availability and make reservations now.

What is provided/included and what do I need to bring?

The cost of the bike tour includes the use of a comfort bike, helmet, a bottle of water, and a light snack. Our Segway tour price includes the Segway rental, helmet, bottle of water, and a light snack. You might want to bring a camera since you’ll find lots of photo opportunities on tour. We advise that you wear seasonally appropriate clothing (not too loose) and closed-toe shoes. Reflective vests and safety lights will be provided for Sites@Nite tours. We also have sunscreen, sunglasses, and gloves available to purchase.

When do I need to arrive for my tour?

We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour is scheduled to depart so that we can fit your bike or Segway and you can fill out the waiver form. You can also print out the waiver, fill it out, and bring it with you.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel my reservation?

Reservations may be rescheduled at any time, depending on availability. Refunds for cancelled tours are available with 48 hours’ notice. Credit card refunds will be accessed a 10% service fee. Cancellations requested with less than 48 hours notice will be issued a full credit which is fully transferrable and never expires.

Is it appropriate to tip my guide?

Gratuities are not included in our tour prices and are greatly appreciated, although not mandatory. If you enjoyed your experience on tour, our guides will happily accept tips for a job well done.

Private & Group Tour FAQs

Who can participate?

Our tours are lead at a relaxing pace and are for the “occasional” exerciser – we welcome anyone who is in sufficient health to comfortably ride a bicycle. Competent children 4’6” or taller may ride their own bike; toddlers and small children may accompany a parent or guardian on a trailer tandem or in a trailer carriage (child trailers that attach to an adult bike). We do our best to safely accommodate special needs – please contact us to discuss.

In the past, middle school students, corporate executives, campers, and octogenarians alike have enjoyed our tours as a part of team building events, school trips, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, company outings, weddings, reunions, family vacations, and more.

We provide a comfort bike, helmet, a bottle of water, and a light snack (for some tours) for each participant. Chose from one of our existing tours or we can help design a custom tour for you.

What is included?

We provide everything the participants will need for an enjoyable, safe ride – including a comfort bike, helmet, water bottles, and a light snack (for some tours). All tours are outdoors so participants should wear seasonally appropriate clothing (not too loose) and closed-toe shoes.

How safe are your tours?

Keeping your group safe is our highest priority. Helmets are required for all participants, and each tour begins with a tutorial on bike usage and safety. Our bikes are maintained by in-house mechanics on a regular basis and our staff checks each rider for correct bike fit and comfort before taking off. Finally, to keep groups manageable, the participant to guide ratio is 15 to one or less.

Do you split up large groups?

Our group tours can accommodate up to 400 participants. For safety reasons, larger groups are divided among multiple tour guides, so that each group is no larger than about 15 per guide. If you are not sure of the size of your group, you can reserve the tour with an estimate, and adjust the number later.

Food and hospitality

We’re happy to help with lunch or dinner plans. There are a variety of dining options at the L’Enfant Plaza food court, conveniently located directly below us.  A picnic on one of the city’s fabulous green spaces is also a great option – we can arrange for boxed lunches during or after the tour. We can also suggest area restaurants that can accommodate your group – big or small.  Please inquire within for more information!

What is your cancellation policy?

If you cancel your group reservation more than 30 days in advance, you will be issued a full refund less a service fee of 5% for a credit card payment or $15 for a check. After that the 50% is non-refundable, and the remaining balance if paid will be returned until 48 hours prior to the tour departure. There is no refund after 48 hours prior to the tour. Tours may be rescheduled (depending on availability) with at least 48 hours’ notice. Tours may be cancelled if the weather makes for dangerous riding conditions. If we are unable to reschedule the cancelled tour, we will issue a full credit or full refund.
